I am younger than Simon Gandolfi- but much closer to his age than Michelle's. I found her enjoyable , perceptive, and was not irritated by her cluelessness of mechanics. She seemed to cope better than I would. What she managed to do was live in India, see and understand what was happening there and report it to the reader interestingly. Yes, one sighs at her suffering over things mechanical , but she also managed on the whole to dodge too much tedium or danger, though she had some of both. I read her book-written 20 years ago, immediately after Gandolfi's, not by choice but because if I decided that if I decided to read it later I might forget to do so. I would like to go to India- my Mother was born, and brought up in Bombay, during the Raj. Her sister stayed on after partition. She spoke often of daily life then and modern India is interesting because of it's ongoing story.Bearing in mind the Tata ownership of Jaguar, and the ongoing (massive) production of Royal Enfield, India is still making progress. Education is often mentioned- rightly. A most interesting and enjoyable read for which I am grateful..
This wonderful book follows a year-long journey around India by a single woman. She leaves her job in banking, takes a motorcycle driving class, goes to India, buys a Royal Enfield 500cc motorcycle, and off she goes, exploring the country. I laughed out loud at some of her adventures, was quite frightened by others, and am just a little stunned at her willingness to give up comfort, safety and predictability for this big, big adventure. Her matter-of-fact impressions of the cultures and the people along her way fascinated me.
I'm a motorcyclist and armchair adventurer. I bought this book on a whim and am pleased I did so. Harrison's writing is more diary than story; she does not dwell much on introspection or use unnecessary words. While I originally had hoped for more depth and a bit more about riding instead of describing places visited I soon became enchanted by her story. I knew little about India but now feel as if I've gotten a fair idea of what it is about. Since the book contains no photos I supplemented it with looking up images on the internet to better understand what the author was seeing. She does meet unique people and have interesting experiences and yes, the bike does break down, but I was surprised a Royal Enfield didn't break more often! The author was young, daring and frequently foolish but it makes for an entertaining read. I am glad Harrison chose to share her story with us.
A good read as a travelogue and a humorous recollection of a motorcycle journey on an old school low-tech bike, proving the old adage "It's better to be lucky than good". Also proves the ready, fire, aim process for living life to it's fullest. Women have such different sensibilities and this was a refreshing read of a ride to a place and time that no longer exists. I am fascinated by the British Wanderlust; it must be in their genes (jeans?) or maybe it's the bad food, lousy weather and lack of dental care. Irregardless, I enjoyed it and admire Ms. Harrison's gumption, courage and spunk.
This is a fantastic travelogue of a single woman's year-long trip, on a motorcycle, through India and Nepal twenty years ago. Michèle Harrison took “breaking out of your comfort zone†to a whole different level. I was amazed at how she took one day at a time with what seemed like very littleplanning ahead. A true optimist, she seemed to know that “it will all work out in the end†and she just kept on. Because there were no photos, I followed along with Google Earth and all the photos it offers for each of her stops. If you like adventure and travelogues, I highly recommend this memoir.
I've like both of her books. Unlike a lot of "adventure riders", she takes a small, practical Japanese bike and very little equipment and really has an adventure. Her other book is also good, where she goes from Alaska to the tip of South America on a small Yamaha. I really don't like these "adventure" stories where they start with a $25,000 BMW and then add $10,000 in special gear and call that motorcycle adventure riding. It's a joke.
After reading several books about solo motorcycle travel, there are some things I appreciate about this one. Very little foul language appears, only when needed to get the point of an encounter across. Also, the narrative seems plausible and has the ring of truth. The only portions I skimmed were the political discussions. No one reads a motorcycle travel book to be educated on decades old political strife.
In full disclosure I bought this book for my girlfriend in hopes she would get the motorcycle bug. More accurately, I bought it in hopes she would want her own bike. To date she is still content to be a passenger on the back of my ride. This should in no way reflect poorly on the writings of Ms. Harrison. However, it did inspire me to download the book to see what the problem was.I quickly found out there was no problem. The story was well told and well written. Although my knowledge of India's geography is sparse I found myself transported, wishing it was me sitting behind the handle bars of "Big Thumper" instead of the author. Would I have had more luck with the mechanics and maintenance of the bike? I hope so, but doubt it.All in all its a fun and easy read. The only hard part is finding an affordable Royal Enfield on Craig's list.
