This resource is useful for my PhD research on tghe Holy Spirit and spiritual gifts, their theology, nature, number, uses and abuses..
Haven't finished reading it because it clearly does not address what the title suggests in any real depth. Quite shallow to be honest. I noticed after I received this book that the forward is written by John McCarthur. That was an immediate red flag since he has a very skewed view of the Holy Spirit and condemns those who do! There are much better scholarly works on the subject.
Dr. Larry Pettegrew is to be praised for his book on the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the context of the New Covenant. Dr. Pettegrew does a great job of not only teaching on the ministries of the Spirit but he gives hundreds of Scriptures for his points. He deals with nearly every possible work in the new covenant from coversion to glorification.If you are a Charismatic you may not fully agree with all that Dr. Pettegrew writes concerning the Spirit but nonetheless he will cause you to biblically think about the Holy Spirit and remain committed to biblical truth (1 Timothy 4:16; Titus 2:1).
Dr. Pettegrew has giving us a great resource of information regarding the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. I believe it is a clear presentation of the Spirit's ministry in the OT and NT. This book is not intented to be exhaustive in the subject but it does give you enough information to keep studying on the subject. Though dispensational, I found it to be very helpful.
