About the Author
Randy Olson earned his Ph.D. at Harvard University and became a professor of marine biology before moving to Hollywood for his second career as a filmmaker. Since obtaining an M.F.A. from the University of Southern California School of Cinema, he has written and directed the critically acclaimed films Flock of Dodos: The Evolution-Intelligent Design Circus and Sizzle: A Global Warming Comedy, co-founded The Shifting Baselines Ocean Media Project, and conducted a wide range of workshops related to the broad communication of science and environmentalism. He is the author of Houston, We Have a Narrative and Connection: Hollywood Storytelling Meets Critical Thinking.

Great read! I purchased this book for an environmental class I was taking.
The second edition of Randy Olson’s _Don’t Be Such a Scientist_ (DBSAS) fills me with a fierce joy – with a desperate need to run to my colleagues and shout, “Yes! This! See?†I have been using Olson’s _Houston, We Have a Narrative_ as the primary text in my Composition in the Natural and Social Sciences courses for a couple of years now. That book is a direct, concise, and entertaining argument for how scientists could and should employ narrative to communicate more effectively. My students respond enthusiastically to Olson’s writing because he understands how to explain complex ideas in a straightforward and engaging fashion with a finely tuned sense of audience. These qualities are on full display in DBSAS. However, what really excites me about the second edition of DBSAS is the overt way in which Olson has turned his critical eye back on his own writing, commenting directly and critically on prior observations, highlighting and underscoring what came before by applying his finely tuned notions of narrative structure, his ABT template. He has added a follow-up section to each previously written chapter, a segment that speaks to the T (“thereforeâ€) in his template and which, in every case, succinctly and sharply aligns his older text with his ever more refined and highly applicable explanations of the value of narrative. These end-of-chapter discussions, combined with a new full chapter and a new introduction, are worth the price of admission alone. Olson’s revisions and additions, and his willingness to turn his eye back again, may force me to add DBSAS to the course reading list right beside _Houston_. I plead with my students to consider what a reader needs from them and what tools and techniques will achieve this end, and then I beg them to go back to their first attempt to look again (that’s what “re-vision†is) in light of an evolving sense of purpose and function. DBSAS 2nd edition demonstrates the method and the message in one tidy package.
Randy Olson, former tenured member of science faculty and currently a filmmaker, continues his rant against fellow scientists for their inept communication skills with the public. In this second edition of his book, the author literally shrieks at his former cohorts to loosen up and spontaneously follow the theatrical improv technique. In six anecdotally rich chapters, scientists are exhorted to reduce their egghead cerebral orientation, to simplify the subject, to create a story or narrative to capture the audience’s interest, to become more engaging, to be a patient listener, and most especially be the instrument for improved science communication. To become effective communicators, scientists need to employ the latest modes of communication in this internet world of ‘twitter’, and especially of video sharing sites. This is quite a heady assignment for those trained in the scientific method and whose milieu demands the scientific argot. Not everyone can transform into science popularizers like the inimitable Carl Sagan. Clearly there is a need for improved science exchange between scientists and the public, this bombastic negative missile does not prescribe the elixir to assuage the dilemma.
