Just what I needed
Great book to help us prepare for a trip to California. Great information regarding where to stay and where to eat.
hard to locate some info
Very hefty - but with some good info.As someone who lived in CA for over 20 years I've spent a fair amount of time exploring it (at least SoCal and up through San Francisco). The basics of why buy a travel guide, for me, are whether it can give context that brings attractions, food, natural sights, etc to life such that you get a real sense of them while visiting. Honestly I don't pay too much attention to food - that's subjective and, as a vegan, this part of guides are not too helpful for me. I mostly focus on things to do - here Fodor's has always been pretty strong. I feel like trying to do a whole state is really the issue with this guide. Everything is so piecemeal and carefully curated that it feels cursory - with short paragraphs and little in the way to create excitement in you to visit and learn. The maps are perfunctory - but not particularly well contrasted such that it is easy to pick things out. The road trip pieces are worthy of the third star - but they aren't the whole of the guide so perhaps a "road trip" guide by itself would be more fun. I just felt the text was tiny, maps were tough to see and kind of cumbersome to use in this large of a guide, and again that text makes it hard to read while in a car w/o really good lighting and my reading glasses. It's not a "carry with you, pull out" type guide. Specific cities are pretty well done (like San Diego, my former home) but still it didn't excite me very much when I went back for a visit.
As a California native, I found this to be an impeccable source guide for the California traveler whether you’re a native or not. In fact, after using this I discovered so much about California that I didn’t know and had never seen. California is much more than Los Angeles or San Francisco. There are so many endless wonderful beautiful places to see and do in the state outside of that. This is a great guide to have in my collection to keep me busy in the state for eons to come.
Fodor's has a long history of writing comprehensive travel guides and Fodor's California is one of those books. Since getting it I have seen so many places I'd like to visit in the great state. There is everything one could need to travel throughout the state with many pages filled with maps, places, info, and sights. There is also a larger take-out map that comes with the book. I must state that there are also some really great photos populating the book. I can't wait to put this Fodor's book to good use by making a trip to California sometime in the future.
This is a travel book for California that covers almost everything you need when you are planning a trip. There is a detachable map, information on planning, exploring and activities divided into sections such as; the Bay area, San Francisco, Sacramento, Lake Tahoe, etc.Maps ae include in the pages and colour photos. There are Fodor’s usual tips and recommendations. It all makes for interesting reading and planning.
Pretty OK guide -- but with google and yelp, sometimes I feel trip advisor does as nice a job. AAA would be a better road trip resource to plan locations and using your smart phone works beyond that -- days of travel guides are almost over!
