I bought this book hoping it would help me find many of these old towns. I knew this book was over 40 years old, so as I wandered though the Black Hills this past summer, I was expecting that many of these Ghost Towns that were still in existence in the early 1970's would be greatly diminished, but in reality, most are totally gone, now. In truth, this book is no longer relevant for someone seeking to see and experience these lost towns (most of them), like I was hoping for, and is now more of a history book.
I am an avid explorer of the Black Hills and this book was a huge disappointment. He admittedly hadn't been to half of the sites and its obvious as much of his info. is quite outdated. Some of these places are also on private land which he does not indicate.
Awesome stuff. Wish I'd had it when I lived in the Black Hills.

The authors put a great deal of research into this treasure of old mining and logging history of the Black Hills of South Dakota. The book is an alphabetical listing of 600 towns; some still thriving but mostly ghost towns.The book provides numerous photographs and locations for most of the towns. However, it was written before global positioning devices and does not have site coordinates.
Decent book. Great photos not as much history detail as I had hoped.

Nice older book of Ghost Towns in the Black Hills. Some of these towns are gone but it is interesting to read about their history. It can also be used as a guide to the towns that are still there.
