About the Author
Jennie Grant is a stay-at-home mother who also makes a living writing newsletters and publicity materials for Seattle real estate agents. She is better known locally, however, as the founder and president of the Goat Justice League, a citizen action group that worked with the Seattle City Council to legalize goats in the city in 2007. Today, Seattle allows it's residents to keep up to three mini-goats, as long as they are neutered and de-horned. City Council president Richard Conlin has one of Jennie's goats that is named after him. Jennie also is involved with Seattle Tilth and is one of its backyard goat keeping class teachers. She herself is an avid gardener; in addition to goats and chickens, her 4000-square-foot city lot includes a large vegetable garden, a big strawberry patch, and about 10,000 or so Italian honey bees (some of whom she has not yet named). In the past year, Jennie began working towards a nursing degree, which she will complete in 2012. This has reaffirmed who belief in the healthfulness of backyard goat's milk. She has been profiled in the Seattle Times, as well as in fellow Skipstone title, The Urban Farm Handbook, by Annette Cottrell and Joshua McNichols.

My husband is not on board...yet, but one day I will have my own city goats. This book gave great info on breeds, care, and much more. If you buy this book through The Goat Justice League site you can get the whole package. A cool t-shirt, bumper sticker, and above all else...the secret handshake. Goats rule!
Lots of useful information for beginners, and most of it applies even if you're not in the states.I used to think there's no way you can keep goats in a backyard within suburban or city limits; now I am convinced it's perfectly possible (much to the dismay of my boyfriend). For someone who has dreamed of owning goats for years, but doesn't have the oportunity to move to the countryside, this is a very encouraging and informative book.The milk section is a bit too long in my opinion, as I'm more interested in goats as working animals and would like a chapter on goat carts etc., but I imagine most backyard goat owners are more into milk. :)
I really enjoyed this book. I've read so many goat books that they are all starting to rn together, but this one had a bit of a different twist since it's about "city" goats, which is what I needed.
Informative book. Now I will definitely NOT get goats. Really they are cute but way too much trouble. Thanks for the unvarnished truth!
We like this book, but for more extensive information on health and wellness of pet goats you'll need to consult a more complete manual. This is a good starting point though for someone new to goat raising.

If you love goats, and I do, this book will bring a smile to your face. It's also full of useful info for raising goats in the city. Nice pictures too.
