Lots of baseball stats. Hard to hold the interest of my class.

Fast paced, good read! My 17 year old enjoyed the book. Easy reading. Would recommend to people with kids. Thanks

I received 42 Is Not Just A Number by Doreen Rappaport published by Candlewick Press to review for this day of diverse books! This book was sent to me for an honest review.Subtitled the “Odyssey of Jackie Robinson, an American Hero,” this book is a biography of how he became instrumental in breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball. All of the chapters are broken down in a way that follows a consistent timeline of his life. There is also a timeline at the end of the book that can be useful for teachers who want to discuss the specifics of Jackie Robinson’s life as it relates to the history of race relations in this country. It is very obvious that the author spent time in order to chronicle Mr. Robinson’s life in a way that would clearly articulate the discrimination and struggles he faced as he crossed over and became an African American icon in the world of baseball. This book gives an excellent history of the determination and courage Jackie displayed as he was a “one-person Civil rights movement” by paving the path alone. This is an important book in American history and should be paired with other resources that express how difficult it was for African Americans who paved the way for us all by trying to desegregate various aspects of American life. Jackie’s story needs to be told to students so that they can study how to persevere and also how to work together and speak out against racism. I would recommend this book for all children in upper elementary school all the way to high school.

This book is a historical narrative about the black man in the U.S. baseball major league who destroyed baseball segregation in the big leagues - Jackie Robinson. It breaks his life into a series of moments, which fill in, represent, and explain his life effectively. Usually, stories are told continually or aren’t split up into chapters with certain dates - so I found this book refreshing in said manner. The importance of number 42 is developed from the beginning and explained in a very satisfactory way at the end. That is not to say that this book covers all of his life (the story itself is only about 100 pages). Rather, its selection of moments was sometimes surprising but still enlightening, since there is more than baseball in this book. Ultimately, I thought the story was a neat one, worth telling.review by Jose C, age 16, Mensa San Francisco
