1. No Online videos and material as advertised. (Kindle Version)2. Seem to teach "more than you need" to pass the exam- E.g, the "Compact" command line utility: It's not an exam objective and It's nowhere in the 70-679 exam Ref.Unless you have time to learn EVERYTHING about Windows (including cli utility), instead of just preparing for the exam as the title suggests, this would be a good for you. For the rest of us who just want pass, its a bit much.
I'm still studying but the textbook covers the topics in detail.
It's unfortunate that for a certificate study guide there seems to be quite a few errors and omissions that somehow got past both the author, editor, and publisher. I really wanted to rely on this book as the 'bible' for this certificate, but I'm at page 121 (of almost 500) and found some blatant mistakes/errors.The obvious one that is even mentioned here on Amazon is that the link to register the book and get supplemental material was printed wrong in the book. Use the link listed here on the book landing page, and then go through the obscure process of registering the book, getting an account, trading emails, to finally get to the stuff. Extra steps for no real reason.So, you want some examples?- Pg 121 author references 'Tool' that there are three of them, yet the book only outlines 2 of the 3, skipping over 'Backup' altogether.- Pg 45. Review question #4 refers to the correct answer as 'Device Stage'. I defy anyone to show me where 'Device Stage' is listed in the book...not the chapter, not the glossary, nowhere.- Pg 82. Author says the 'Next 3 exercises will help in creating virtual hard disks" starting with Exercise 2.7. The next 2 exercises are completely omitted, not even mentioned or referenced. Instead New Topic 'Creating Virtual Machines' is introduced. Huh?- Pg 154. Exam Question 4 inquires about 'features' of dynamic disks solely for Win 10. Explanation of Answer "D" (pg 496) instead talks about supports of all Win OS's that doesn't even come close to the Answer D on pg 155. This answer is way out of context.- Pg 298. Chap 6 Exam Question 10. According to the answer key on pg 499, the correct answers are B & C. However, the choices provided for C & D are exactly the same....WORD FOR WORD. So technically, B, C & D are correct since C & D are the same answer.There are a few others as well, but that's not a great sign when you are only 1/5th through the material and you can locate some pretty major errors.
I purchased this book as well as the "Configuring Windows Devices 70-697" by Andrew Bettany and Jason Kellington .Exam Ref 70-697 Configuring Windows Devices. They are the two most popular books covering the 70-697 exam by far. After going through both cover to cover it really seems like William Panek rushed this book simply for sales. The book goes over many of the topics on the test but merely skims the surface. It will by no means prepare you for the test. I realized how much time I wasted with this book after going through Microsoft's version.I would say that Panek wrote an introduction to the test with his exam guide. Currently there is no exam guide that will prepare you 100% for the exam (my opinion as well as many others) but if I could give any advice, pick up Bettany and Kellington's exam guide.
I passed the 70-697 today, hype!!! It was hard, not going to lie, even after preparing for it for months. I did buy this book some months ago but found when I purchased the measureup practice test that the book was lacking. I added CBT nuggets 70-697 to go along with it and STILL felt slightly unprepared for the test. If I had to gauge which gave me more knowledge, I'd say CBT nuggets did as I took all of my notes from the videos and skipped the book entirely only using it for small references when i felt i was missing something.As I stated earlier, you will encounter questions that'll make you mad as hell because neither reference material mentioned this. There were a few questions where I was blitzed by PS fill in the blank about Storage. The other questions that'll piss you off are the put commands in sequence or you get the whole thing wrong questions. All I can advise if when you run across explanations during learning that list commands in order, write them down. Even still, you'll run across some questions you have to work out as you may not exactly know the answer. This is where your knowledge of what answers are wrong will really shine.My suggestion is to use multiple sources to study for this including the practice measureup exam. That will definitely give you a heads up on the types of questions thrown your way and how to prepare for them. At the end of the day, the goal is to PASS the test, not score the highest in history. It's tough so be prepared. I'm going to take a break from studying (I told myself no video games until I passed) and get back into the job market. Good luck to everyone!
I found this to be the most helpful book I read in preparation for the exam. The one suggested by MS is ok, but as others have noticed it mostly redirects online to dig deeper into topics, whereas this one does the digging in the book itself. The chapter-end quizzes were good, but the online material was the most helpful. Flash cards and several tests were available, either open-book with clues or exam-style, and these helped build my confidence before the exam.I do not work in an enterprise environment. This book, and the one by Bettany & Warren, were the only ones I used to prepare for the exams, and pass on the first try. Of course, I researched a lot online, got a free Intune trial to play around, and explored with VMs to get practical experience, but the books are what got me across the finish line on test day.
Well written and spot on for the subject. Panek makes the best of a tedious and boring Microsoft excursion into Administrator torture. Great book, Windows 10 is what there is, and what will be, for good or ill. This book will get you certified.
Does not cover much of the material on the current test. Seems way out of date.
