A fun idea – Earth having another dimension. You enter the alternate dimension called Tuala via the Bermuda Triangle. Which is what our heroine, Amanda, does quite by accident on a boating excursion with her fiancé. Once in Tuala, she’s imprisoned by an obnoxious character who keeps her drugged and uses her for his own pleasure. Eventually, she manages to escape, and the rest of the story is about her efforts to find her way back to Earth while making her way in Tualan society.Of course, a lot happens along the way, including (spoiler alert) a pregnancy that surprises Amanda, but not the reader, and meeting people who seem awfully familiar. It’s an interesting tale about a society very different from our own, where elders rule the world, Tualan wise women perform the function of physicians in our dimension, and where babies are assigned crystals to wear around their necks so their mothers can spy on them and protect them from harm. This is book #1 of a series, so to learn Amanda’s fate and the fate of her twin daughters, you have to read the series. I enjoyed book #1 but found the cliffhanger ending a bit abrupt.

As Amanda Covington and her boyfriend Nealan (Nealand Taivas) celebrate their engagement on a Caribbean cruise, on the yacht Neal got from his parents Nealand, Sr. and Jessica as a graduation gift, she enters another dimension. On the same planet, two different dimensions, one called Earth, and the other Tuala. The characters include Bryon Kesh who works with the shipping warehouses in Kirma; Maga a four anon old horse; Bryon’s wife Alena who is a healer; kids Justan, Andera who is Justan’s betrothed, and Kyelon; Elder Debbon who resides in his Elder Isle Residence; Petre MacVeen who found the The Golden Jesisca yacht and Amanda, pilfering anything of value on the yacht before turning it over to the Elders and taking advantage of the injured girl on the yacht, after drugging her and showing “no limits to his depravity”; Amanda’s father Chris and mother Diane; Captain Issyn who picks Amanda up on the Gulf of Thulen and takes her to the port city of Cresdon; Harbor Master Ahn; Ceren who works for Captain Ahn; Barla wife of Ahn who is careful not to tell anyone Amanda is from Earth and teaches Amanda Tualan history, culture, food, abilities; God named Jehoban; Devil known as Lucinden; Barla’s children Gravin, and Rasa who’s chosen to be taught by Jehoban, Corva a foster child, Gatson, Dr. Stephen Gascon, Dr. Medin at Canon Memorial Asylum, Tana, twin babies Juila and Jena, Frasnia, Dr. Flores, nurse Bota.In ‘two worlds kept separate even though they had access to one another through the Ascension Gates’, Amanda encounters new things in Tuala like beetlesnatchs the flesh eating beetles, telepods, foxl a cross between a sheep and a cow, tocolas a corn-based chip, glawlet a warm roll filled with a poached egg covered in gravy, steena tea, birth crystals that change color, and Tualan people who possess and use teleportation, telekinesis, translation, deception, healing, amplification, etc.

This book has me conflicted. On one had I rather enjoyed the unique creativity this book has to offer. It is imaginative and has some good world building. I enjoyed the concept of this story. What I feel conflicted about is it seems more of a telling than a showing. It could use some clean up in that aspect that the author could indeed show a lot more of the story rather than tell the reader what is going on. The telling takes away from the originality of the story and makes for a less smooth read. There is a lot of unnecessary information that gets dumped on the reader from the get go. It was overwhelming at times and got confusing as the story started out, but eventually it worked itself out. As a reader myself, I would have preferred to not have to be info dumped on but rather unravel it as the story progresses and develops with the plot and the characters.Conflicts aside, the author has a fantastic idea going here. Some parts in the beginning seemed like the story could do without as it slowed the progress of the story and made me question if I would actually get pulled into it and enjoy it, but after a bit things pick up and we get more invested in whats going on. Its a slow progression but eventually you begin to find your connection after you get used to the voice the author is writing with and look past the telling. I recommend this to fantasy lovers. If you do pick this up, stick with it. Its a choppy start but eventually you'll begin to get into it. It is also the first in the series, so I suggest reading in order as I am certain the second book may not be a stand alone and you would get confused. I give this 4 stars. It would easily be a 5 star read if there was some clean up with it to make things more smooth and not so overwhelming. As the story goes along though, the writing progresses and the world begins to build. the character developments start to show and makes it better towards the end. Its not perfect but it is good.

I’m going to pay this book the highest level of compliment by comparing it to Robert Heinlein’s Number of the Beast.Eighteen-year-old Amanda finds herself shifting between two dimensions that occupy the same space. On Earth, she is deemed insane for believing in the extraordinary. On Tuala, she embarks on an incredible adventure, in which she is first horribly exploited, but ultimately finds love and companionship. The story is well told and full of adventure. Amanda is as relatable and likeable as any character in any book I’ve ever read. I could feel every bit of her pain, confusion, curiosity, and joy. This is a complex story, expertly woven by an excellent author. The ending was perfectly satisfying while leaving me thirsty for more.I highly recommend Outside Ascension to any science fiction fans who like deeply developed characters and would like to get in on the ground floor of what is sure to be a fascinating series.Execution of Justice: Covert Ops Military Assassination Thriller
