I feel cheated. This turns out to be a collection of previously published magazine articles rather than a coherent book. Some of them are really old--like ten years or more. Only the first chapter is new material, and while that's interesting it's not worth the $14 purchase price.If I wanted magazine articles I would have bought a magazine. The reason I buy books is because I appreciate extended, reasoned arguments. You won't get that from this book--all you get are a bunch of semi-random pieces stapled together.Maybe I didn't read carefully before I bought the thing. It should have been stated clearly upfront: "An anthology of previous writings with a new introduction.So the intro is interesting. Mr. Kaplan describes how the world is becoming more connected but at the same time politically disintegrating. I think that's useful, and I even underlined portions. But it's not worth $14--it'll show up for free on the web soon enough.
I read the Revenge of Geography and that is why I bought this book.The work itself is worth reading and has some great chapters linked to its title.Nevertheless, the book deviates from its main thesis when it starts to resemble a collection of non related articles ranging from Kissinger to Trump.At the end, No central theme was distilled in this piece of work and "Marco Polo" was forgotten.Though, I have to admit that it still a good read.
Basically I could simply have continued to read my subscription to Foreign Affairs magazine and gleaned a lot of the same stuff. I bought two books for the beach...this one and "Leonardo da Vinci" by Issacson. da Vinci by a long shot. This was just a compendium of previously written articles that seem to bend back to support the new observation that Marco Polo's previous worlds are coming back into vogue. The Return of Marco Polo's World is the upfront introduction to the book, then the balance of the articles are presented that help support the newer piece.If you are a subscriber to FA, as I am, some of the pieces get to be very long, and sometimes dry as toast. A few spots here can claim that title. It does have some redeeming qualities as it introduces some folks that I have not heard of before and have gone off to review some of their writings.
I have read at least ten of Kaplan's books, and this, like 'Earning The Rockies', were the only ones that were not extremely insightful.While Earning the Rockies was overly nostalgic and narrow, MARCO POLO'S WORLD is mostly out-of-date essays, more a history of how his insights evolved than anything new.I WAS aware that it was a book of previous essays, but NOT that they were as old as 2001.Only one is less than three years old, written during the week after the 2016 election. With the exception of a very detailed analysis of Huntington's 'Clash of Civilization' and its author's background, there just wasn't much new.
Kaplan's books cover a wide range of topics of history, geography and political science, and he has also written for a variety of publications, most notably the Atlantic. This collection of articles covers the major aspects of today's geopolitical challenges and gives us insight into what we might be seeing in the near future. A must -read for anyone interested in International affairs ( and given the number of places that conflict is likely to erupt - this should be everyone)
Another great book from. Robert Kaplan. This one is a collection of articles. I enjoy how deeply he delves into history and possible future outcomes in international affairs. In several of his articles, he covers authors who have influenced his thinking.
A great way to stimulate your brain and challenge your ability to understand what the forces determining our future will be!
I blame myself for not realizing that this was a collection of previously published articles complied into a book. While that was a bit disappointing, the overall writing is good and I enjoy Kaplan’s take kn geopolitics.
