Although I’ve read more fantasy/scifi books than any other kind in the last 68 years of reading, mysteries have been my second favorite. I’ve always admired the ability of those writers who can create stories that make us wonder “whodunnit” right up to the big reveal. For the most part, over the years the major mainstream writers have written “pure” mysteries: someone is murdered, and the detective...Miss Marple, Poirot, Tommy and Tuppence, etc....gets to work and figure out who the murderer is. Any love or romance that might be mentioned is off to the side, in terms of the plot, with just a passing mention. So what’s this got to do with “Fish Out of Water?”Well, what I admire as much as the “pure” greats, is the ability of MM mystery writers to weave a believable romance into an intriguing, gotta-keep-those-Kindle-pages-turning mystery. Writers like Amy Lane.I envy her, too, because I simply don’t have the type of mind to figure out those kinds of complexities, and then get us emotionally involved in the journey to love for the two main characters. And what fascinating men Jackson and Ellery are: an up-from-the-slums ex-cop turned PI for a major law firm, and a defense attorney at the firm with the modern equivalent of an aristocratic background. So very believable, and you care so very much what happens to them, in a story with a lot of twists and turns. An excellent mystery, an excellent love story, and an ending that...well, it isn’t a cliffhanger.Perhaps it’s a hilldangler?Just enough to let us know that the tale of these two isn’t quite over? You oughta read it. Really.

I was pleasantly surprised when I started this book. There were many contradicting reviews, and I didn't know what to expect. I really liked this story. I wondered about the name of the book "Fish Out Of Water" and who it was meant to represent. First, I thought that it was Ellery but maybe it was both. Ellery is that rich nerd kid who nobody liked at school and who never felt accepted, and when he starts a relationship with Jackson he first does not know how they fit. Jackson grew up in the low income area struggling to survive, he got betrayed over and over, and he thinks he is not worth much and that he would bring the person close to him down. When Ellery comes into his life he does not know how they fit. They are both fish out of water. This is a book about two men from two completely different walks of life that collide unexpectedly and from the moment they are together they each know deep down that neither will walk away. They fight and tease like cats and dogs, they work together like a well-oiled machine, they burn the sheets and then in the middle of the night they sooth each other's hurts and keep nightmares at bay. Someone is out to get Jackson Rivers. He survived once, but this time it involves his family and one man who came close enough to see his battered soul and love him anyway, warts and all. They dodge bullets, car crashes, thefts and dirty cops who will stop at nothing to wreck one family's life. It's a constant roller coaster of ups and downs, wins and losses, safety and danger.I loved both Ellery and Jackson. They each were so different but they meshed so well in all aspects, they complemented each other and the way Ellery saw Jackson made their budding love so precious. I loved the humor, the sarcastic banter, all the secondary characters and, of course, Billy Bob the cat with penchant for German shepherds. Not a boring minute! This is a thrilling, romantic and intense read! I loved every page and I highly recommend it!

I almost can't even believe I'm writing this review. I love Amy Lane - I love her books, I love her writing, I love the way she writes, her tone, her "voice", I love everything. I did NOT love this book. I didn't even like this book. I had to force myself to finish it. I can't put my finger on exactly why...but I really think it boils down to too much. It was all just too much. I thought the story line of crooked cops was a little opportunistic and maybe not the best idea given the current political climate, but - okay, its not my place to tell an author what she is or isn't allowed to write. But the bad cops in this story were almost comically bad. So over the top crooked it was cartoonish and ridiculous. They were so bad, and so conveniently far reaching, and yet just stupid enough to leave a ton of seemingly easily traceable clues. Not to mention the fact that they conveniently drove an SUV with a backfire that gave them away in every instance. And I know Amy is the queen of angst, and normally I love her angsty books - but in this one it started to get old and just...too much! Another kid with a crappy mom who practically starved him, another pieced together family being torn apart at the seams, the crap always just keeps piling on and piling on. Another best friend with trucker mouth and heart of gold, who conveniently falls for the white trash neighbor who says incredibly offensive things, but of course also has a heart of gold, so its okay, And the two male nurses that conveniently manage to get the blood work done before anyone else and then always happen to be in the right, or wrong place and the right, or wrong time. So convenient. And none of it felt genuine. So...I don't recommend this book, but I do highly highly recommend ANY of her other books, so if you've never read Amy Lane before, I'd start with something else.

Maybe my expectations for this book were too high. I'd been wanting to read it for a long time. I loved the cover, I liked the premise since it reminded me a bit of the Cut and Run series. But........Something just didn't work for me. The police/crime procedural to relationship balance was off. Too much thinking, and talking about their past and their relationship status got in the way of the actual plot. Less info dump, more action.I liked it, but I wanted more from this. I know Amy Lane is a hit or miss for some of us, and lately I've been getting more misses than hits. Not sure if I'll pick up the next one in the series, maybe she deserves another go.
